Creating Your
Main Character Energy

You don’t have to be on a stage or have an audience to embrace your main character energy. Main Character Energy is about stepping into your story with confidence and creativity, owning your narrative, and expressing your authentic self in a world that sometimes tries to box you in. For the LGBTQ+ community, where self-expression is often a lifeline, this energy isn’t just about taking up space—it’s about celebrating who you are, finding your voice, and creating the life you want.

If you’ve ever felt like a supporting character in your own story, or that the plot feels confusing and out of order, you’re not alone. Life can be messy, and sometimes it’s hard to find your role. But the good news is, like any great script, your story is full of possibilities waiting to be explored.

Here’s how to take the lead role in your story through self-expression and creativity.

Act 1: Disconnecting From the Noise and Connecting to Yourself

Think of your life as a playlist full of genres. Some days are smooth jazz, and others feel like chaotic EDM. To find your main character energy, you need to hit pause, tune out the noise, and reconnect with the melody of your own story. Life can throw in dissonance, but creativity and self-expression are your tools for finding harmony.

Breathe

Before you can step into your story, you need a moment of stillness. Breathing exercises calm your nervous system and clear your mind, helping you see your life and your creative potential more clearly. Try box breathing (inhale for four counts, hold for four, exhale for four, hold for four) or download a breathing app like Calm to guide you.

Meditation

Meditation isn’t about clearing your mind; it’s about making space to listen to it. By quieting the noise in your thoughts, you create a breeding ground for creativity, where new ideas and inspirations can take root. Creative meditation practices, like guided visualizations or mantra meditations, can help you explore your thoughts and tap into fresh perspectives. Use this time to imagine yourself stepping into your power as the creator of your story.

Rituals

Integrate creativity into your daily routines to help you stay connected to yourself and express your unique energy. This could mean doodling affirmations to look at while you’re doing your skincare routine, putting your thoughts on paper before bed, or creating a playlist to accompany your morning coffee. Consistent rituals like these build a foundation for expressing your authentic self while weaving creativity into the everyday moments of our lives.

Act 2: Owning and Protecting Your Story

Every great story has twists, turns, and moments of conflict. Embracing your main character energy means becoming the author of your life, editing out what doesn’t serve you, and highlighting your strengths. Your creativity is your pen, and your self-expression is your ink—use them to write the story you want to live.

Journaling

Capture your story through writing. Use your journal as a canvas for creativity: write about your dreams, sketch your mood, or jot down moments of gratitude. For LGBTQ+ individuals, journaling can be a safe space to explore identity, reflect on challenges, and celebrate milestones. It’s your personal storyboard, helping you navigate the highs and lows of your journey.

Setting Boundaries

Protecting our creative energy is just as important as expressing it. Boundaries ensure you have the time and space to focus on what matters to you. Learn to say “no” when something feels draining and “yes” to what fuels your passion.

Speaking Up

When your story feels stuck, asking for help can be a game-changer. Whether it’s leaning on our support networks or seeking guidance from a therapist, sharing our challenges allows us to rewrite the narratives that no longer serve us. Your voice is a powerful tool for growth.

Your story, Your way

Main Character Energy is about showing up fully for yourself, exploring your creativity, and embracing the role of storyteller in your own life. Whether you’re creating art, expressing yourself through fashion, or finding joy in daily rituals, every moment is a chance to shine. Take a deep breath, pick up your metaphorical pen, and start writing your next chapter with confidence and creativity.

Act 3: Opening Up to Your Next Chapter

Imagine your story as a painting—each brushstroke is a new experience, and every color represents an emotion. The canvas of your future is blank, ready for you to add vibrant layers of creativity and self-expression. Embracing Main Character Energy means stepping into this new chapter with curiosity, courage, and the knowledge that your art is uniquely yours.

Affirmations

Turn self-doubt into confidence with affirmations that empower you. Start with statements like, “I am proud of who I am,” or “I deserve space to create and grow.” Repeat them daily to build your self-belief.

Vision Board

Think of a Vision Board as a storyboard for your life. Instead of focusing on things, create a “Future Feelings Board” that represents the emotions and experiences you want more of—like confidence, love, creativity, or freedom. Use this as a visual reminder of your goals.

Supporting Characters

Your story isn’t just about you; it’s also about the connections you make. Build a creative support network of friends, mentors, and allies who uplift us and encourage our self-expression. Host group activities like a poetry night, collaborative art project, or dance party to celebrate and inspire one another.
